What is atopic dermatitis?<\/h2>\n

Atopic dermatitis<\/strong> is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes dry, itchy, and irritated skin. It often starts in childhood but can persist into adulthood.<\/p>\n

Causes and risk factors:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Genetics, a weakened skin barrier, allergies, environmental triggers, and immune overactivity all play a role. It's more common in families with a history of eczema, asthma, or hay fever.<\/p>\n

Types and classification:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Atopic dermatitis is part of the "atopic triad" (eczema, asthma, allergic rhinitis). Severity can range from mild dryness to widespread flare-ups with oozing and cracking.<\/p>\n

Main signs and symptoms:<\/strong>
\n•    Intense itching
\n•    Dry, scaly patches
\n•    Redness and inflammation
\n•    Cracking or bleeding skin
\n•    Commonly affects the face, neck, hands, elbows, and knees<\/p>\n

How is it diagnosed?<\/h2>\n

Usually based on physical exam and medical history. In some cases, allergy testing may be recommended.<\/p>\n

Treatment options:<\/strong>
\n•    Moisturizers (used daily, even during remission)
\n•    Anti-inflammatory creams (steroids, calcineurin inhibitors)
\n•    Antihistamines for itching
\n•    Lifestyle changes: avoiding irritants, using mild soaps
\n•    In severe cases: phototherapy or systemic medications<\/p>\n

Complications and prevention:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Scratching can lead to skin infections and thickening. Prevention includes regular moisturizing, identifying and avoiding triggers, and early treatment of flare-ups.<\/p>\n

Atopic dermatitis and pregnancy:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Flare-ups may improve or worsen. Most topical treatments are safe, but always check with your doctor before using any medication.<\/p>\n
