What Is Fetal Sex Determination?
Fetal sex determination is performed during an ultrasound examination by evaluating the developmental characteristics of the fetus’s external genitalia. In many cases, it is possible to determine the baby’s sex starting as early as the 12th week of pregnancy, provided that fetal positioning and visualization are optimal for the assessment.
The accuracy of sex determination increases with advancing gestational age; therefore, a more definitive and reliable evaluation is typically achieved during second-trimester screening ultrasounds.
When Is Sex Determination Possible?
- Starting from the 12th week: Subject to adequate clear visualization and positioning.
- During the 18–22-week screening ultrasound: Achieved with the highest degree of diagnostic accuracy.
- Within the framework of routine prenatal ultrasound examinations.
Important Information: Fetal sex determination is strictly performed as a component of a comprehensive medical ultrasound examination and does not constitute a standalone screening or diagnostic service. The primary objective of the ultrasound scan is to evaluate fetal development and overall health; identification of the baby’s sex is an optional finding, made possible only if favorable physiological conditions are met during the scan.
